Communities and the War

In nine communities, historical organizations, libraries and schools worked together between 2013 and 2015 to study what happened in their areas during the Civil War. They digitized items from their historical collections relating to the Civil War era and residents of their area who participated in the war; held "One Book, One Community" reading and discussion programs, and engaged in other activities relating to the Civil War.

The projects were made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Maine Humanities Council and Maine Historical Society collaborated and worked with the 10 communities on the Local and Legendary Civil War project.

One result of each team's work was creating an exhibit for Maine Memory Network. Those exhibits appear here.
